Main Unit Transformer

The electricity created at the Main Generator is now routed to the Main Unit Transformer.

  • The Law of the Transformer

A Transformer is a device that changes (transforms) voltage from one value to another. A Step Up Transformer increases the voltage while a Step Down Transformer is used to decrease voltage. They consist of a soft iron core with two coils wound around them which are not connected to one another.

At Turlough Hill, we use Step Up Transformers when exporting electricity to the National Grid. This is because they are very efficient at sending electricity over long distances at a higher voltage. Sending electricity this way greatly reduces energy losses.
