The Cavern

Main Generator

The Main Generator is stationed above the Pump Turbine. With the turbine blades turning the shaft as we have just discovered, the Main Generator converts this mechanical energy to electrical energy.

  • The Main Generator Explained

With the water now passing through the Pump Turbine, the vertical shaft (known as a Rotor) rotates clockwise. This Rotor is in fact a moving magnetic field. It is positioned inside another large magnet called a Stator which is made up material that can conduct (carry) electricity. The mechanical energy of the Rotor is converted and transferred into the Stator in the form of electrical energy.

The link between magnetism and electricity was established by the English scientist Michael Faraday.

This is the final energy conversion that happens while the water is being discharged from the Upper Reservoir, and after this the electrical power is exported to the National Grid.
