Pump Turbine Unit

Let's not forget the water from reservoir. Having done it's work rushing through the Pump Turbine, it now flows down and out of the Tailgate Tunnel into the lower Lough Nahanagan.

  • The Law of the Transformer

A Transformer is a device that changes (transforms) voltage from one value to another. A Step Up Transformer increases the voltage while a Step Down Transformer is used to decrease voltage. They consist of a soft iron core with two coils wound around them which are not connected to one another.

At Turlough Hill, we use Step Up Transformers when exporting electricity to the National Grid. This is because they are very efficient at sending electricity over long distances at a higher voltage. Sending electricity this way greatly reduces energy losses.
